Apostille & Attestation for clients in Austria
In short

Between Austria and India the apostille is in force, so consular attestation is generally not required. Austrian documents are apostilled by the Austrian authority responsible for that type of document: the regional court president for notarial and court documents, the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs for federal documents, and provincial offices for many civil status records. Indian documents for Austria are apostilled by India's Ministry of External Affairs, after state-level authentication where required, and then translated into German.

Apostille & Attestation from Austria: how it works

For Austrian documents going to India, we tell you which original or certified copy the Indian office needs and whether it must be notarised first. For example, an Austrian marriage certificate for an Indian passport application, or a company extract for an Indian incorporation, each go to a different apostille office. We then advise whether an English translation is needed and who should certify it. Sending the wrong type of copy is the most common reason for rejection.

For Indian documents going to Austria, such as birth, marriage, degree or police clearance certificates, the MEA apostille is obtained through its authorised outsourced service after any required state or HRD verification. We can collect the documents from your family in India, arrange the verification and apostille, and courier them to Austria. Austrian authorities usually also require a translation by a court-certified translator in Austria, which you arrange there.

What clients in Austria should know

  • Austrian authorities may require recently issued Indian civil status documents; old certificates sometimes need to be reissued before the apostille.
  • Indian educational documents need verification by the issuing university or state education department before MEA will apostille them, which can add weeks.
  • Germany's objection to India's accession does not affect Austria, so do not follow advice written for German residents about consular attestation.

Questions from clients in Austria

Can the Indian Embassy in Vienna apostille Indian documents?

No. Apostilles on Indian documents come only from the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, through its authorised centres. The Embassy can attest some documents, but that is a different process.

How long does an Indian MEA apostille take?

Usually a few working days once the document has been verified at state level, but verification can take longer.

Do Austrian documents need translation for India?

Yes, if they are in German. Indian offices generally accept a certified English translation.
