Repatriation of Funds for clients in Kuwait
In short

An NRI living in Kuwait can remit up to USD 1 million per financial year from an NRO account to Kuwait, including property sale proceeds and inheritance, after Indian tax and with Forms 15CA and 15CB. Funds that can be traced to earlier remittances from Kuwait may go back through the NRE route. We assemble the legal papers and work with your chartered accountant and bank.

Repatriation of Funds from Kuwait: how it works

The starting point is the origin of the money: a property bought with Indian funds or with dinars sent from Kuwait, an inheritance, or matured deposits. We gather the sale and purchase deeds, the buyer's tax deduction certificates, succession papers and NRO statements. A chartered accountant certifies Form 15CB, Form 15CA is filed online and your bank processes the transfer to Kuwait. Where property was bought with NRE or foreign funds, sale proceeds of up to two homes can be repatriated outside the annual limit.

Banks often ask for more detail on large outward remittances, so we send them a single organised file. With no personal income tax in Kuwait, the tax questions all arise in India: whether the right tax was deducted and whether a refund is due. Indian citizens with high Indian income and no tax liability elsewhere may be deemed resident, and we check this before large transactions.

What clients in Kuwait should know

  • Deemed residency can apply to Indian citizens with Indian income above ₹15 lakh who pay no tax abroad; Kuwait residents should check this.
  • NRE interest is tax-free in India; NRO interest is taxed with deduction at source.
  • Remittances over USD 1 million in an Indian financial year need RBI approval.
