A succession certificate from the civil court in India allows legal heirs to collect a deceased person's bank deposits, shares and other debts. Heirs in Qatar sign the petition affidavit or no-objection affidavits through the Qatari notary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassy of India, or at the Embassy. After a public notice, the court grants the certificate, which banks accept.

Succession Certificate from Qatar: how it works
We list the assets with their values, because court fee is a percentage and only listed assets are covered. The petition is filed in the court where the deceased lived. Every heir is named and either joins or consents. Siblings working in Qatar can sign together to reduce attestation costs, while those in India sign locally, and we check that every name and relationship matches across documents.
After the public notice period, the court hears the petition and usually grants the certificate within a few months if nobody objects. We submit it to each bank, depository and employer and deal with their indemnity forms. Money is credited to the heir's NRO account and can be remitted to Qatar within the annual limit with Forms 15CA and 15CB. If a relative objects, the court takes evidence before deciding who is entitled, which adds time; we keep you informed after each hearing and fix any dates needing you during your leave.
What clients in Qatar should know
- Ask each bank whether a nominee was registered; nominees can receive funds faster, though heirs keep their rights.
- A succession certificate does not cover land or houses, which pass by inheritance and are recorded by mutation.
- Inheritance is not taxed in India or Qatar; income earned on it afterwards is taxed in India.
