For a resident of Qatar, a power of attorney attested in Doha is usually what allows a parent, sibling or lawyer to stand in for them at an Indian registry, bank or court.

Power of Attorney for clients in Qatar
In short

In Qatar, an Indian citizen can execute a power of attorney before the consular officer at the Embassy of India in Doha. Alternatively, it is notarised by the Qatari Ministry of Justice, attested by the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then attested by the Embassy; this is the route for non-Indians. In India the power is stamped within three months of arrival and, for property sales, registered or authenticated as the state requires.

Document route
Qatari notary (Ministry of Justice), Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation, then Embassy of India attestation
Time difference
IST is 2h30 ahead of Qatar time all year (no daylight saving)
Recognition
Section 33, Registration Act 1908
Authentication
Indian mission, or notary plus apostille

Power of Attorney from Qatar: how it works

We prepare a power tailored to the job, describing the property or case exactly as it appears in the Indian records and listing each act permitted. Bring the printed, unsigned document, passport and QID copies and photographs to the Embassy or its partner centre, and sign before the officer. If you follow the Qatari chain instead, the notary may need an Arabic translation, and each of the three attestations takes a few days, so allow two weeks or so overall.

In India, your attorney takes the original for adjudication and payment of stamp duty within three months. Many states require powers used for sale or gift of immovable property to be registered or authenticated, and some registrars ask the attorney to confirm on oath that you are alive and the power has not been revoked. We check these local requirements before you sign, to avoid a second trip to the Embassy. Keep the power specific and revoke it when the work is complete.

What clients in Qatar should know

  • Qatar is not an apostille country, so a power notarised in Qatar is accepted in India only after both the Qatari foreign ministry and the Indian Embassy have attested it.
  • An English power notarised in Doha may carry a bilingual Arabic certificate; registrars in India will want the English text clearly legible on every page.
  • If you hold a Qatar residence permit under a family visa, the Embassy still treats you as an Indian national for consular signing, provided you show your Indian passport.

Questions from clients in Qatar

Can I sign the power of attorney online from Qatar?

No. Indian registrars require an original power signed in person and attested. Electronic signatures are not accepted for property powers.

Is one power enough for property in Kerala and a court case in Karnataka?

It is possible, but separate powers for each task are easier to stamp, register and revoke.

What if the power was attested only by the Indian Embassy, without Qatari attestation?

If you signed before the Embassy's consular officer, that is sufficient. Qatari attestation is needed only when a Qatari notary witnessed the signature.
