NRI Income Tax & DTAA for clients in Qatar

Working in Qatar removes local income tax from your salary, but rent, interest and gains in India keep many Doha residents inside the Indian tax system.

NRI Income Tax & DTAA for clients in Qatar
In short

A non-resident living in Qatar pays Indian tax only on income earned or received in India, such as rent, NRO interest, dividends and capital gains on Indian assets. A return is due if that income exceeds the basic exemption or tax deducted is to be refunded. The India-Qatar tax treaty, supported by a tax residency certificate from the Qatar General Tax Authority and Form 10F, can reduce rates on interest and dividends.

NRI Income Tax & DTAA from Qatar: how it works

We first confirm your residential status for the year from your passport stamps, applying the 182-day rule and the 120-day rule where Indian income exceeds ₹15 lakh. We then gather Form 26AS and the annual information statement, bank interest certificates, rent agreements and any property sale documents. Salary credited in Qatar is not taxable in India for a non-resident. If you want treaty rates, you apply to the Qatar General Tax Authority for a residency certificate and file Form 10F electronically.

Banks and buyers often deduct tax at the maximum rate from NRIs, so refunds are common once a return is filed. For a property sale, a lower or nil deduction certificate obtained before closing can prevent excess deduction in the first place. We prepare and file the return, respond to notices and, where needed, issue Forms 15CA and 15CB for remittances. Note that the Income-tax Act 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, so returns and forms now follow the new law's terminology.

What clients in Qatar should know

  • Qatar does not tax individual employment income, so Indian tax paid on Indian income is usually a final cost rather than something credited in Qatar.
  • Residents of Qatar sometimes spend long summer holidays in India; a stay that tips you into resident status makes your Qatari salary relevant to Indian tax.
  • Notices from the Indian tax department arrive by email and on the portal; keep your registered mobile and email current even while in Doha.

Questions from clients in Qatar

Is my Qatari salary taxable in India?

Not if you are a non-resident for that year and the salary is received outside India. Status depends on your days in India.

The bank deducted tax on my NRO interest at a high rate. Can I get it back?

Yes. Filing a return lets you claim a refund of excess deduction, and treaty rates may apply if you hold a Qatari tax residency certificate.

Do I need an Indian chartered accountant?

For returns and Form 15CB on remittances, a chartered accountant's input is usually needed. We work with one so that the legal and tax sides are handled together.
