A Fiji citizen can apply for OCI through the online portal and the High Commission of India in Suva if they, a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent were Indian citizens on or after 26 January 1950, or eligible to be, or if they are the spouse of an Indian citizen or OCI cardholder married for at least two years. Descendants of girmitiyas who arrived before 1916 are often fourth or later generation, so check current notifications on extended eligibility.

OCI Card Issues from Fiji: how it works
We start by drawing up the family tree and attaching a document to each link. For families who came after Indian independence, the ancestor's Indian passport or citizenship certificate is often still with relatives. For girmitiya families, the emigration pass recorded at embarkation, Fiji birth and marriage certificates for each generation and any Indian village records are what we have to work with. Names on emigration passes were often written as heard by a clerk, so variations are expected and should be explained in a sworn affidavit made in Fiji and apostilled.
The application is filed online and submitted with supporting documents to the High Commission in Suva, which forwards it for processing. Where the claim depends on an ancestor who left India before 1947, the question of whether that ancestor was eligible to become a citizen on 26 January 1950 can be contested, and the result depends heavily on the papers. India has announced special OCI eligibility for later girmitiya generations in some countries; we check whether and on what terms this applies to Fiji at the time of filing. Once granted, OCI gives lifelong multiple entry to India but no right to buy agricultural land except by inheritance.
What clients in Fiji should know
- Fiji spellings of Hindi and Tamil names vary widely; one consistent spelling across the passport and OCI form avoids most queries.
- Indo-Fijians who have since become Australian or New Zealand citizens apply through the Indian mission in their new country of residence, not in Suva.
- A Fiji citizen who was once an Indian citizen must show that the Indian passport was surrendered or that citizenship ended, with a renunciation or surrender certificate.

Questions from clients in Fiji
Is a girmitiya emigration pass enough to prove Indian ancestry?
It is strong evidence that the ancestor came from India, but you also need to prove each generation from that ancestor to you, usually with Fiji birth certificates.
Can my Fiji-born wife get OCI through me if I hold OCI?
Yes. The spouse of an OCI cardholder can apply after the marriage has been registered and has lasted at least two years, subject to security clearance.
What if my OCI application is rejected?
You can apply again with better evidence or ask the High Commission for reasons. We review the papers and advise whether a fresh application is likely to succeed.
