OCI Card Issues for clients in Trinidad and Tobago

For many Indo-Trinidadians, an OCI card is a way to formalise a family link to India that began with an ancestor who sailed from Calcutta generations ago. The difficulty is usually proof, not desire.

In short

An Indo-Trinidadian can apply for an OCI card through the High Commission of India in Port of Spain if they can show descent from an eligible Indian ancestor. The general rule covers children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and India announced in 2025 an extension to the sixth generation for the Trinidad and Tobago community. Evidence typically includes indenture-era emigration records and a chain of birth and marriage certificates linking each generation.

OCI Card Issues from Trinidad and Tobago: how it works

We help you assemble the chain of evidence. The starting point is the ancestor's emigration record, often found in records of the indenture period held in the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago, which may give the name, village and district in India. Each later generation is linked through Registrar General certificates. Spellings of Indian names were often anglicised or changed, so we prepare affidavits explaining variations, sworn before a notary or attorney-at-law and apostilled for submission.

We also check whether any disqualification applies, for example a parent or grandparent who was a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, which bars OCI. Applications are made online and then submitted to the High Commission. If a decision is delayed or refused, we can help you respond to queries or seek review. An OCI card gives a lifelong multiple-entry visa and parity with NRIs in many economic matters, but not voting rights or the right to buy agricultural land.

What clients in Trinidad and Tobago should know

  • Names recorded on ship registers may differ from family names used today, so explanatory affidavits are often the key document.
  • An OCI card is a registration, not Indian citizenship, so holding one does not require you to give up Trinidad and Tobago citizenship.
  • The sixth-generation extension announced in 2025 should be confirmed against the notified rules before you apply.

Questions from clients in Trinidad and Tobago

Is an OCI card the same as Indian citizenship?

No. It is a lifelong registration giving visa-free travel and certain economic rights, but no Indian passport, vote or right to hold most public offices.

Where are indenture records kept?

Largely in the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago, with related records in India and the United Kingdom. Family documents can fill gaps.

Can children apply with their parents?

Yes, if the parent qualifies, minor children can generally apply too, subject to the rules in force.
